From 5% to 40%: the agent curve
The trajectory of enterprise AI adoption, read in the numbers from Gartner and McKinsey.

The hook
In 2023 almost no one had deployed generative AI. In 2026, two of every five apps will have agents.
It's not a jump: it's a curve. And adoption curves punish whoever waits for them to be obvious.
The thesis
The question isn't whether to adopt, but whether you arrive before or after the curve.
Whoever climbs early sets the standard; whoever climbs late pays the price of catching up.
Develop
Three years, three jumps
The progression is sharp once you line up the numbers.
- 2023 — under 5% of enterprises had deployed generative AI in production (Gartner).
- 2026 — Gartner projects more than 80% will have deployed it.
- 2025 — 88% of organizations already use AI regularly (McKinsey).
- 2026 — 40% of enterprise apps will have task-specific agents, from under 5% in 2025 (Gartner).
Evidence
Agents are no longer demos
62% of organizations already experiment with agents and 23% scale them (McKinsey). Sequoia describes the market as an order of magnitude larger than the cloud transition.
Adoption stopped being a bet and became a timetable.
Counterpoint
Isn't this just analyst hype?
It could be, if it were a single source. But Gartner, McKinsey and venture capital point to the same curve with different methods. The convergence is the signal.
Close
The curve won't wait for you
The time to climb isn't when everyone already has. It's now, while 40% is still a forecast and not a done deal.
